The journalist Adam Jenkins, in his review of the 2022 album “Revolutions go in Circles” for the UK magazine Fatea, said “Mark Mulholland is a restless force of nature. I see him like an inverted lightning conductor, plant him somewhere, anywhere, and music flows out of the ground through him and out into the world. Occasionally a musician like Mulholland comes along who appears driven to create and record music that is both globally connective and an immediate response to his surroundings and musical companions.”
Exchange, exploration and the magic of shared experiences, in music and in life, are common threads running through Mark Mulholland’s career.
From playing in psychedelic bands in Edinburgh to busking in the streets of Europe, forming bands in the West of Ireland and swapping songs with other songwriters in the febrile atmosphere of Prague after the Velvet Revolution, hosting a legendary open-mic session for several years in a concert venue he helped found in Berlin in the 90’s, epic tours criss-crossing Europe and North America with the country-folk troubadours Two Dollar Bash, recording with Nikki Sudden and Captain Sensible, collaborations in Port-au-Prince with Haitian polymath and living national treasure Frankétienne and the stunning afro-beat/voodoo/electronic/psychedelia project The Afro Haitian Experimental Orchestra, featuring afrobeat legend Tony Allen and many of Haiti’s most talented musicians, creating and running a festival in Bamako with kora maestro Toumani Diabate, blending Mandingue and Celtic traditions in Alba Griot Ensemble‘s exquisite album “The Darkness Between the Leaves”, fusing pop-rock with the sublime voice of griot singer Kankou Kouyate to create an album chosen as the best record of the year of any genre by the Danish newspaper Globalnyt, production work with Afel Bocoum, Damon Albarn, Rachid Taha, Wesli and touareg rockers Tamikrest amongst others, collaborating with Mozambican legend Chico Antonio in Maputo…the list goes on.
Along the way he has recorded more than 20 albums, solo or with bands and other configurations, and many more as producer, engineer or arranger, plus a host of contributions as a guest or session musician. He produced the latest album by Malian legend Samba Touré, released on Glitterbeat Records in January 2025 to critical acclaim, and recently co-wrote and recorded a song, “Playing with the Big Boys”, with French trip-hop/electro-pop pioneer Kid Loco. The types of music he plays range widely, but his distinctive style is always recognisable. As Dave Franklin noted in his review of “Somewhere Else”, the 2016 album that Mark recorded in California with Rusty Miller and James Finch Jr under the name Rummage, “He manages to hop genres at will – raw rock, melodic pop, late night cabaret club ballads, chilled blues and country grooves – but still come out with a cohesive collection of songs which somehow not only feel at home on the same album but also uniquely and intrinsically his own.
”Revolutions go in Circles”, recorded in Bamako, Paris, Berlin and New York, featured collaborations with many of the musicians he has worked with in recent years, including Toumani Diabate, Tony Allen, Yacouba SIssoko, Stéphane Doucerain, Vincent Bucher & Baba MD, rand eached number 2 on Roots Music Report’s Folk Rock top 50 chart. Seuras Og, in the magazine At the Barrier, described it as “one of the more charming records of the year. A pearl of a project, exquisite, an unexpected joy.”
His latest album, “Fighting with your Shadow”, will be released on May 2nd on Ports of Call Music.
He has another album ready for release recorded with Australian drummer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hughes, which will come out in late 2025, and is touring regularly,
